Storybook Holland: April 18-28, 2014

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

Following our very successful 2012 trip, this foreign travel digital photography workshop will focus on Holland’s amazing extravaganza of tulips and other bulbs at prime locations in the charming and colorful Dutch countryside, as well as visits to explore Holland’s charming villages.

Our itinerary includes everything from the acres of colorful bulbs at the Kuekenhof Gardens and to countryside blanketed with tulip fields to the canals of Giethoorn and the iconic windmills around the town of Lekkerkirk. Visits to wonderful private gardens will complete your rare photo experience.

Our trip is geared to the needs and interests of photographers. Our group is limited to ten participants so you will get personal attention and one-on-one assistance throughout the workshop, whether you need advice on choosing the right lens, using the right settings, making the most of available light, adjusting to various kinds of weather or creating exciting compositions with color, texture and lines. Along the way, we will make time for review sessions to learn from each other’s images and develop our skills using easy after-capture techniques.

The price for this workshop is $4,000 per person with double occupancy; the single supplement is $800 per person. A $1,000 deposit to hold a space is due by January 15, 2014; the deposit is refundable less a $100 administrative fee until February 15 and the balance due by March 15.

I invite you to join me on this spectacular photographic journey. For a detailed itinerary and additional information, please call me at (646) 519 1751 or email me at [email protected].

Travel Photography Adventure to South India: January 6-27, 2014

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

Please join me next January on an unusual travel photography workshop that I will lead to South India, one of the world’s most exotic and colorful destinations. I’ve been to India several times and can tell you that it is a photographer’s dream — visually rich and culturally fascinating.

South India is home to fabulous Hindu temples, colorful markets, fascinating villages, beautiful gardens, unspoiled beaches, misty hillside plantations and much more offering a stunning array of photographic opportunities.

Our trip runs at the perfect time: in January the weather is more temperate and it’s the month of the amazing Pongal harvest festival. We start in Chennai (formerly Madras) and end in Bangalore. In between, we will experience the vast array of South Indian culture — all with excellent guides who know the region and have relationships with its people.

This workshop will pay special attention to the needs of photographers. The group is limited to ten participants. That means you’ll have plenty of individual attention in the field and enough time in each location for serious photography. We’ll have opportunities to respond to the unexpected and even for review sessions every few days along the way.

The cost of this incredible trip is just $5,000 per person, double occupancy; $1,000 per person single supplement. A deposit of $1,000 is required with your registration; the deposit is refundable less a $100 administrative fee until October 15 and the balance is due by November 15, 2013.

In addition to my daily photographic instruction, this includes transfers at arrival and departure, accommodations at 4-and 5-star hotels throughout; all breakfasts and dinners; air-conditioned transportation, local English-speaking guides, monument entrance charges, taxes and service charges. It does not include international airfare but we can help you with making those arrangements.

I urge you to join me on this unusual photographic journey. For a detailed itinerary and additional information, please call me at (646) 519 1751 or email me at [email protected]. I know this will be one of your most memorable travel experiences and a photographic opportunity of a lifetime.

Vero Beach Museum of Art

Travel almost always goes together with photography. But how many of us come back from our journeys with the kind of strong images professionals create for catalogs and magazines? In this weekend workshop, I will share the tricks of trade that I developed during my many years traveling on assignment for magazines and corporate clients. In preparation for our field outings, we’ll develop a shot list so everyone goes into the field with a clear purpose. We’ll also discuss essentials like 1) creating a sense of place; 2) creating a mood using natural light; 3) photographing people, including friends and strangers. Then, using locations in the Vero Beach community as our destinations, you will have opportunities to gather images for individual travel photo essays. The workshop will include daily review sessions to help you hone your photographic skills and enhance your vision by seeing and analyzing images by all workshop participants. We will also explore after-capture techniques to perfect our images further. For details and to register, click here.

What’s New

Wednesday, July 17th, 2013

Dear Fellow Shutterbug,

I know it’s been a while since my last update. My apologies.

I’ve really been on the road quite a bit, with two back-to-back foreign trips — a wonderful exploration of Peru last December followed by my South India Photography Adventure in January. Then I spent some time in Florida with a lectures and workshops in Kissimee and Key West, followed by workshops in New York and Texas. Look at “New Shoots” at the right here and here for photos taken at some of these workshops.

Now I’ve just come back from a three-week road trip on the West Coast scouting for destinations and visiting some of you along the way. It’s always fun to meet with my students around the country to explore the areas where they live. I’m sure some new workshops will emerge from those travels. By the way, I always enjoy hearing from you. Here’s a really nice post from a participant in one of my workshops.

In the meantime, I’ve put together a schedule of lectures and workshops for the next few months and beyond. I hope some of them will entice you. Please see the listings below and tell your friends.

Whether you are a returning student or a new participant, I hope to see you at one or more of these workshops to learn, have fun together and renew or build our connections.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

All the best and hope to see you soon,

Allen Rokach

Chanticleer: A Pleasure Garden in Wayne, Pennsylvania

The gardens at Chanticleer are designed to look spectacular in each season. In autumn, the garden’s innovative combination of plantings — a great mix of fall flowers and colorful foliage of every shape and texture — create an especially exciting palette for photographers. This workshop will concentrate on creating images built around color, shape, line and texture, making strong visual statements using these abstract elements of design. We will also focus on portraying flowers in their garden setting, which is so special at Chanticleer. Then, in our review sessions, we will explore ways to improve and fine-tune our images in creative ways using today’s amazing but simple after-capture applications. For details and to register, click here.
